As we’re growing up, falling is a natural part of developing our balance and steadiness.
However, as we get older, falls can have a devastating impact on a person and could lead to long-term effects on their physical health and mental wellbeing.
As well as physical consequences such as loss of mobility, falls can escalate into loneliness, hopelessness, despair and depression.
So, to keep residents at Braeburn House (one of our retirement living schemes in Walsall), on their feet and bring everyone together, we offered them an opportunity to partake in a Fall’s Prevention and gentle exercise programme This was inclusive to everyone who lives at the scheme.
Sponsored by Sandwell Council and involving Sandwell Irish Community Association as a delivery partner, the project aims to support individuals who have lost their mobility and have a history of falls or poor stability.
Conducted by qualified Extend tutors and similarly qualified persons, the programme introduced a system of exercise designed to improve strength and stability.
Residents firstly had an initial assessment to discuss goals, and to pick up notable points on lifestyle and identify pressing needs. Following this, they took part in group and individual activities to improve mobility and balance, such as leg extensions and biceps curls. They’ll also be receiving a Fitbit to help them measure their daily steps, heart rate, and more.
Intended outcomes are hoped to be improved balanced, muscle strength, general fitness, physical wellbeing and confidence.
As well as having great fun and improving mental wellbeing
